Valentine's Day Night Look - Nancie Mwai (4)

Yesterday I posted my first vlog, watch it here if you haven’t watched it yet. This is not my first vlog, I did one years back in 2011. It was a disaster in my eyes, however people loved it. I never ended up doing another one after that simply because I felt it was not good enough. This is the same story I have with my first makeup tutorial (that one for sure was extremely ratchet) I took down the video 24 hours later after a lady commented “you should do your research on use of brushes and good lighting.”

I had filmed that video in a dark bathroom, I filmed it at night and I was at the coast. My makeup was melting off and I didn’t even use any foundation, all I did was my eye shadow. One day I will share a photo of that look, I guarantee you’ll either laugh your butt off or feel sorry for young Nancie. The next time I did a makeup tutorial I had done enough research and gotten myself a decent camera and that was 3 years later!!I do regret taking so long to get back to filming but if I was to go back in time I would do the following differently;

Just Do It

Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity, perfect equipment, perfect date, perfect blog etc. just start with what you have. An idea is useless if you don’t act on it. It’s better to make mistakes on the job and quickly improve and learn from them. In order for you to be a “genius” at what you do, you have to have made enough mistakes and gained confidence in your craft.

Work With What You Have

I was going to start vlogging once I purchased a vlogging camera; I got impatient and started using my phone. More often than not you can practice your craft with items that you already have around you. The time you spend waiting for the perfect equipment to start you off should be spent developing your craft.

Research and Consistency

Never stop learning about your craft. No one is 100% good at what they do, research, move with the times and implement what you learn in your own creative way. The more you learn the more you teach others. Consistency gives you confidence in your craft, the more you do it the better you get. Every time you put out something you’ve created, the quality always improves due to new learnt skills.

Perfection Does Not Exist

The worst thing you could do is try to be perfect. The best thing you can do is be yourself. Do not compare yourself with someone else who is on chapter 20 of your craft and you’re in chapter one. Instead look for the qualities you love in them and get inspired by that. Always try to be a better version of yourself at the end of the day. Leave more tips in the comment box below, it will go far in helping anyone in the beginning stages of practicing their craft.

    As cliche is this may sound… this is just what I needed to hear this morning! I’ve been on an emotional roller-coaster these past few days about the next step in my life, my passions etc and it seems the good Lord sent you to speak to me after I broke down last night. Thank you for this Nancie, thank you for being you and thank you for being a constant inspiration. God bless!

    The back background is amazing. It blends well with your burgundy dress. As I grow older I realise I am taking time in doing things Coz I’m afraid of failing. Maybe it’s just time to go back to my old habits.. Just do it without thinking so much about whatever I’m doing????
